With the advancement of industrialization, fewer and fewer young people pay attention to traditional handicrafts or show enthusiasm for learning them.
Nowadays, barely any young people are willing to engage in the national intangible cultural heritage of rattan weaving.
In related industries ranging from rattan furniture to decorations and gifts, high-end products mostly adopt rattan materials imported from Vietnam and other regions combined with semi-manual weaving techniques.
Cheaper goods are mainly made of plastic pieces imitating natural rattan textures paired with metal frames, whose plain woven patterns are easy for mass machine production.
We do not regard craft evolution as entirely negative.
Nevertheless, the unique properties of premium natural rattan, the exquisite hand-weaving techniques developed and refined over more than 1,700 years, as well as durable works with great collection value,
deserve to be popularized, experienced and embraced by younger generations.
For this purpose, we cooperate with local governments and schools to invite K12 students and even foreign tourists to learn about this time-honored rattan weaving heritage.
We are glad to teach them basic weaving skills, allowing them to integrate their own ideas and inspirations into handmade works crafted by themselves.
In an era where both adults and teenagers are immersed in short-video platforms like TikTok, we guide people to witness the whole process: how raw rattan goes through 18 elaborate processing procedures before use, and how delicate hand-weaving takes plenty of time and patience to turn it into unique artworks. We aim to convey that creating fine works always requires devotion and perseverance. When people’s love for nature and daily life fails to resonate in the mainstream market, rattan weaving serves as a wonderful way to fulfill such sentiments and bring warmth into daily life.
We sincerely hope that more young people will take up and inherit this ancient craft, and join us in passing down this precious intangible cultural heritage forever.
